Fonts: Econ Sans and Econ Sans Condensed. Most data visualizations use sans-serif typefaces - like all charts from The Economist and Bloomberg: The Economist, 2022. – in Datawrapper is possible with a custom theme. Changing the fonts – including size, placement, color, etc. Our free Datawrapper visualizations, for example, use the sans-serif typeface Roboto. They look cleaner and are often easier to skim than serif fonts, especially when it comes to numbers. For data visualizations, sans-serif (”without serifs”) typefaces are most often the better choice. Serif typefaces (like Times New Romanor Georgia) bring you into a reading flow - that’s why they’re great for setting long texts like novels or newspaper articles. This article explains all these options - and shows how ignoring this advice can set your visualization apart from others.Ġ2 Use a font with lining and tabular numbers.Ġ3 Use a font with all the symbols you need.Ġ6 Use neither overly narrow nor overly wide fonts.Ġ8 Use a high-contrast color for most text.Ĭhoosing a font Use sans-serif typefaces. On the web, that means sans-serif, neither overly narrow nor wide, regular (instead of bold or thin) text set in sentence case, in a size that’s big enough to read, and in black or almost black. Easy to read is everything that readers are used to. The short answer: When in doubt, set your text in a font that’s easy to read. And then they are so many extra ways of adjusting them (uppercase, size, color, …). Many of these typefaces come in different fonts (thin, bold, …). How should the text appear in your data visualizations? The possibilities are endless: There are millions of typefaces out there (Arial, Times New Roman, Lato, …) belonging to different categories (serif, sans-serif, condensed, wide, …). "But over the course of human history, we have done things that are inherently dangerous because our curiosity gets the better of us. On 1 February, the space shuttle Columbia disintegrated as it returned to Earth from a science mission. Every one of them is an opportunity for disaster, and that's the nature of it. What was to be a stellar year for NASAcontinuing work on the international space station and double launches to Marsturned into a horrible supernova above Texas. "Everybody who talked about shuttle launches that are 'routine' - there is no such thing. "The nature of it just scared me every single time," he admits. A worthy venture, O'Keefe says, but - for all the wonder so many feel upon witnessing a launch - never one that should see people lose sight of the risk. Space is also increasingly the playground of private enterprise, with the likes of SpaceX and Blue Origin setting themselves grand targets to go further than humans have before. The site at Cape Canaveral has been a hub of excitement since November, when the launch of the Artemis mission kicked off NASA's bid to return people to the moon for the first time in more than 50 years. NASA commemorates the victims of Columbia, as well as its other fallen astronauts, every January, with flowers laid and tributes read during a memorial service at Kennedy Space Center. Image: Sean O'Keefe accepts a copy of the report from Admiral Harold Gehman "So I went into this with a determination to do whatever I could." "I knew, if we were facing loss of the crew, that this would be having the same impact on the agency that the Challenger accident had years before," he says. Scott Hubbard was picked as the only NASA representative on the investigative board to work with Air Force generals, Navy admirals, and former US astronauts to paint a detailed picture of why Columbia ended in tragedy. Not long later, the official investigation was launched. The breakup of Columbia had already occurred, its wreckage raining down on Texas while the crew's loved ones waited unawares at the Kennedy Space Center. "It got to within about two minutes of 00 - usually before you see the shuttle, you hear two sonic booms as the shuttle passes the sound barrier, which tells you it's about to land. Just like a launch day, we had a countdown clock, with these big numbers that would progressively roll downwards. "Normally, you can set your watch as to when the shuttle will come through the atmosphere. "The mood went from excitement and anticipation to despair, once it became evident that the shuttle wasn't coming home," he tells Sky News. The administrator at the time was Sean O'Keefe, who was with the families of the astronauts when it became clear something was wrong. Pic: NASAīefore the loss of the crew was even confirmed, Hubbard received a call from the NASA administrator's office asking him to represent the agency in an investigation into what happened. Challenger disappeared as white vapor bloomed. But 73 seconds after Challenger’s launch, that dream quickly became a nightmare. Image: The crew pictured aboard Columbia during its final mission. Great tips and ideas if you are wanting to teach the art of handwriting to your children: Here is an interesting article written by The Globe and Mail on cursive writing that may prompt further reflection.Īlso, I thought I’d share a recent post from a blog and stationery store that I follow. Nearly everything important I write that is for someone else’s eyes is typed and sent electronically. There is rarely anything that I handwrite that gets sent outside the house. I find most of my handwriting, however, is limited to my own lists and post-it notes around the home and office. I found the art of calligraphy a definite bonus throughout my life, and still practice “lettering” as a fine art pastime. I still practice calligraphy to this day, and prefer to use a fountain pen when writing, even though it is for my own eyes. Personally, I grew up learning to cursive write and was inspired by a teacher in upper elementary who also taught us calligraphy with dipping pens. The cursive versions of “b” and “d” look very different! The act of forming letters and words that are all connected encourages proper left to right action and cursive letters are not so easily confused. I’m not sure of all the benefits of learning to cursive write, but I have personally observed that children with “directional” challenges (printing letters or words backwards or upside down) can find some relief through cursive writing. BUT – what is the benefit of cursive writing? It is, after all, a multi-sensory brain activity – thinking the letter, then using an instrument to form the letter, saying the letter name, making the letter sound – all these activities, when done somewhat simultaneously, can help a child learn their letters and associate letter names and sounds with the given letter. Learning letter formation is definitely a must as it helps the brain learn phonics. I often get asked about teaching cursive writing. She later reappeared on December 8, 2021, and lasted until the end of the year. Interestingly, the regular pig enemies still appear as enemies in the event, even though the pigs are against Zeta in the movie. She has new sounds and expressions, along with a Toons styled design. In Angry Birds 2, Zeta appears as a boss in The Angry Birds Movie 2 Event, where she replaces all of the boss pigs (if connected to Wi-Fi.). In Angry Birds POP! and Angry Birds Transformers (as Nightbird), Zeta is an ally to the Angry Birds and helps them defeat the Bad Piggies (in the former) and helps them free Piggy Island from the EggBots in the latter. Zeta's varies through different games as in Angry Birds 2, Angry Birds Transformers (as Slipstream), Angry Birds Friends, and Angry Birds Reloaded, Zeta is an eagle who is enemies with the birds, but she works with the pigs even though the birds and pigs are working together to stop her in Angry Birds Reloaded. Zeta is a tall purple limbless Philippine Eagle with black eyelashes and a curved light purple beak with three sharp teeth (two on the left side of the beak, and one on the opposite side) sticking out of it.Īpparently in Angry Birds POP!, Angry Birds Blast!, Angry Birds Friends, and Angry Birds Reloaded, Zeta sports a different design, with her wearing a long dress like her Movie counterpart. Generally speaking, Cathay will release one first-class award seat when the schedule first opens and occasionally release one or two more closer to departure. For more details on this search process, be sure to review Richard Kerr's post on the best websites for searching Oneworld alliance availability. You can also use the Qantas website, which is sometimes better at showing complete itineraries on Cathay. For example, if you're trying to fly from Chicago to Hong Kong and then connect to Bangkok (BKK), search for the Chicago to Hong Kong leg and do a separate search for Hong Kong to Bangkok. If you're trying to travel beyond Hong Kong, you should search segment by segment to get British Airways to show you the space. Your next best option is to use the clunky British Airways website to search for space and then call your booking partner of choice with the exact flight number(s) and date(s). Related: Amazing Cathay Pacific awards just got easier to search and book So, you'll want to start your award search here. Note that this award availability only is appearing on the old American Airlines award searching tool. It used to be that Oneworld partner American Airlines didn't show any Cathay Pacific award space, but as of September 2019 it's now possible to search for and book Cathay Pacific awards directly with American. While Cathay Pacific is a member of the Oneworld alliance and has a number of other individual partnerships, some award search engines will not display Cathay Pacific award space. On Cathay, each seat is a full 36 inches wide and offers 81 inches of pitch.īefore we discuss the best loyalty programs to use to book these awards, let's talk about how to find them in the first place. The only airline I can think of with a sparser 777 first class cabin would be Air France's La Premiere which only has four seats (Singapore Airlines also has four first class seats on some of its 777s). Related: The hardest first-class products to book using points and miles Cabin layout and seat selectionĬathay Pacific's first-class cabin features only six seats laid out in a spacious and private 1-1-1 configuration. The airline has responded by reducing frequencies on several of these routes, making those elusive first-class awards just a little bit harder to find. That's plenty of time to eat, drink, sleep and do it all again! Unfortunately, the ongoing protests in Hong Kong have put a huge dent in Cathay Pacific's revenue over the last few months. Hong Kong's geographical location makes all of these long-haul routes to North America and Europe ideal to get the full premium experience, as many of these flights are in the 15-hour range. In this way, the anode will only be formed of lithium particles and will have a smaller volume than a lithium-ion technology anode, which contains the graphite structure. When the cell is charging, the lithium particles move from the cathode, through the structure of the atoms that form the separator, and then move in between the separator itself and the anode’s electrical contact, thus forming a solid layer of pure lithium. The fact that there is this solid, resistant support allows the removal of the graphite structure on the anode part and ensures that lithium metal accumulates directly on the anode (there are also semi-solid solutions where the electrolyte is a gel). It therefore becomes the medium through which the ions move and also has electric insulating properties and as a mechanical separator between the anode and cathode. The grey central layer is the solid-state separator which, on its own, acts both as the separator between the anode and cathode and as the electrolyte. An anode made of lithium metal (pure lithium).A separator, generally ceramic or solid polymer, which also works as the electrolyte.A cathode (or positive electrode), which can be made with the same compounds as a lithium-ion battery (eg.While in traditional lithium batteries, the electrolyte is a liquid, solid-state cells are formed of: However, the internal structure of a solid-state cell is very different, as all its parts are solid. The lithium ions therefore move through the electrolyte and intercalate in the crystal structures of the two anode and cathode electrodes (structures which have empty spaces inside, where the lithium ions fit as they are very small particles). In a current lithium-ion battery, the separator does not have any other functions apart from insulation and is totally submerged in the liquid electrolyte which soaks everything inside the cell and becomes a real medium through which lithium ions move between the cathode and anode, where the anode is made from a graphite structure. The electrolyte fills the entire volume inside the cell, soaks the electrodes and allows the lithium ions to move by acting as a connecting link between the cathode and anode. the medium through which ions move an organic liquid that contains lithium salt. a thin layer made from a plastic polymer (polyethylene or polypropylene) which acts as a mechanical separator between the anode and cathode and works as an insulator. carbon or graphite) and the current collector the negative pole of the battery made of anodic material (eg. Listeners to Battery Weekly know this all too well, the live weekly programme on the Flash Battery LinkedIn and YouTube channels, where every Monday at 6:00 pm, our experts, Marco Righi, Alan Pastorelli and Daniele Invernizzi review the latest news from the world of electrification and where the subject of solid-state batteries has become one of the hottest topics.īut when we talk about solid state, a variety of different factors come into play, with a series of great advantages but also many limits that are still being studied and, to date, are delaying its entry onto the market. Solid-state battery technology may seem like the final frontier of technology in this sense, a solution being finalised that has all the potential to become the future of electric mobility. The lithium battery sector is constantly evolving, with real research every day into developing increasingly high-performance, innovative technologies, which can guarantee greater range, power and ever shorter charging times. It’s like me and country music: My girlfriend likes it, but I can’t stand it. Some people just don’t want to embrace a new genre because they don’t know it. We don’t want to just focus on the guitar nerds.ĭo you still find that some traditional shred fans are resistant to what you’re doing? Are they coming around a little? It’s cool to see girls are liking it, because let’s face it, that’s just cool. SCOTT LEPAGE: We don’t sit around and say, “Hey, let’s do something to bring chicks out to the shows.” We just try to make music everybody will enjoy. We have 50 people on stage a lot of times, and a lot of girls. We do this thing called “mobbing,” where we bring people on stage with us, a whole crowd. TIM HENSON: Yeah, that’s awesome, isn’t it? It’s definitely, you know, inspiring. It’s not surprising that you guys don’t seem to draw the typical shred crowd at your shows. When you go in with that kind of mindset, you’re bound to be fucking awesome.” “If we had one overarching goal in making this record, it was to do whatever we like, and what we like happens to be the shit. “I have to say, we killed it on this album,” Henson says confidently. And as for the album’s tour de force, “Nasty,” it’s a genre-defying hotbed of jagged chords and spindly leads that is capped off by Richardson’s outer-limits soloing. “G.O.A.T.” is a trance-inducing array of shimmering, ethereal harmonics that dance about like fireflies on a hot summer night. “O.D.” comes at you like a whirling dervish of lethal lines and savage rhythmic blows before it settles, albeit briefly, into a late-Eighties-style slow jam. Expertly guided by hip-hop/pop producers Y2K (Killy, Yung Bans) and Judge (Migos & Marshmello, Young Thug), the album features bracing guitar work by Henson and LePage along with a host of axe-wielding guests (among them are Ichika, Mateus Asato and Jason Richardson) on a wild pack of sonic creations that just don’t behave like normal songs. So the only way to keep shred alive was to kill it and bring it back to life our own way.” He snickers somewhat fiendishly, then says, “It kind of pisses people off, but we’re having fun, so fuck it.”ĭespite the online gripes and raspberries for The Most Hated, Henson and Le Page love the disc, so, along with bassist Clay Gober and drummer Clay Aeschliman (two guys named Clay in one band - that’s a first), they aimed to replicate its trap and EDM foundations on New Levels New Devils while emphasizing guitars, bass and acoustic drums. Shred doesn’t have hip-hop beats, electronica shit and hooks, but that’s the stuff we love, so we went for it. “We started out as more of a shred band, but we put the brakes on that. “We just try to make music that we like,” he observes. His six-string co-conspirator, Scott LePage, is slightly more circumspect in analyzing Polyphia’s radical approach to instrumental shred, one that ditches the genre’s traditional focus on traditional rock rhythms for a hallucinogenic mélange of beats and soundscapes that comes off, at times, as decidedly anti-rock. If I were a kid, we would be my favorite band. “I think we’re very, very good.” He pauses, then adds with a laugh, “No, I think we’re great. “I listen to our records all the time,” he says. Not one given to subtlety - or modesty - Henson doesn’t refrain from singing his own band’s praises.
